How to change your cPanel password

There are two ways to change your cPanel password, and the difference is simple: one needs the current one, the other does not.

Before you start: this is your cPanel password. It is not the same as your My MozOut one, nor your cPanel one, nor the one on each e-mail account — they are independent, and changing one does not touch the others.
Where Needs the current one? When to use it
Inside cPanel Yes A routine change, already logged in
From My MozOut No When you no longer remember the current one

Inside cPanel

1 Log in to cPanel (here is how if you do not know the address).
2 Find the Preferences section and open the password and security option.
3 Enter the current one, then the new one twice, and confirm.

From My MozOut

1 Log in to My MozOut and open My Services.
2 Pick the hosting service and use the option to change the cPanel password.
The consequence that catches almost everyone: the cPanel password is also the account's main FTP password. The moment you change it, your FTP program, your backup plugin and any system that publishes files automatically stop working. Update them the same day, or you will find backups quietly not happening.
What does NOT change: the passwords on your e-mail accounts stay exactly as they were. They are independent and handled separately — see how to change those.

If you cannot remember the current one, use the reset. And if the reason for changing is a suspected break-in, change the My MozOut one too and read how to tell if your site has been compromised.
