Choosing your WordPress home page: a static page or your latest posts

The short answer: WordPress can show on the home page your latest posts (like a blog) or a fixed page you wrote (like a company site). You choose it under Settings > Reading, in “Your homepage displays”. For almost every business, the fixed page is the right one.

Which to choose

Your site is... Use
A company, shop or service A fixed page. You control what the visitor sees first. The blog, if you have one, goes on another page.
A blog The latest posts. The home page is the list of what is new.
A company with a blog A fixed page for the home and another page for the blog (for example, “News”).
A shop (WooCommerce) A fixed page, with featured products. The shop has its own page.

Step by step

1 Create two pages: “Home” and, if you want a blog, “News” (or “Blog”). They can be empty for now: Creating and editing pages.
2 Open Settings > Reading.
3 Under “Your homepage displays”, choose “A static page”.
4 Choose “Home” as the homepage and “News” as the posts page. Save.
5 Write the home page with what the visitor looks for: What goes on your home page.
6 Check on a phone and in the menu: Menus in WordPress.
Do not pick the same page for both things. If the “Homepage” and the “Posts page” are the same, the home page shows the list of posts and loses the text. In a block theme, the home page also depends on the Editor’s “Home” template.
A home page that is also a landing page for an ad is another thing: Landing pages.
