The short answer: an affiliate link pays when it reaches someone who really needs a website, a domain or e-mail, at the moment they need it. Dropping it everywhere, with no context, almost never works and can earn a bad name. Whoever recommends well earns more, and keeps earning on renewals. Your personal link is on the Affiliates screen in My MozOut; how the programme works is in The affiliate programme.
Where it usually works
| Where | How to do it well |
| To your own clients | Anyone who builds sites, shops or e-mail for others can recommend us at the end of the project, instead of reselling. The client keeps their account and pays directly. See Affiliate or reseller. |
| A blog or site of yours | A useful text on the subject (how to choose hosting, how to register a domain) with the link where it makes sense. The reader is already thinking about it. |
| WhatsApp, in conversation | To someone who asked you, in answer to a need the person mentioned. Not in groups where it is not allowed, nor to contact lists that asked for nothing. |
| Social media | By answering questions (“does anyone know where to register a domain?”) or with content of your own. Say the link is an affiliate link. |
| Videos and tutorials | A real step by step (for example, creating a site) with the link in the description. |
What to avoid
| Avoid | Why |
| Mass messages to people who did not ask | It is spam, it is frowned upon and it may be illegal, depending on the country. It also damages the sender’s name. |
| Promising what is not true | “Free site forever”, “guaranteed profit”. Say what the service does, and point to the plans for the rest. |
| Passing yourself off as us | Do not use our name or logo as if it were an official message. Recommend in your own name. |
| Hiding that you are an affiliate | Readers have a right to know you earn from the recommendation. One sentence is enough: “this is an affiliate link”. |
| Spending on paid ads that use our name | Ask us first. We do not know in advance whether that is allowed, and it is a way to spend money for nothing. |
To recommend well
|
|
|
|
| Read the programme’s terms before you start. They rule, and they may change. If in doubt about what is allowed, ask us before spending time or money. |
