.mz domain extensions: which ones exist and who can register them

National extensions immediately say where your company is. Mozambique has several, each with an intended audience — and some do require proof.

The Mozambican extensions

Extension Who it is for
.co.mz Companies and commercial activity in Mozambique. The most common choice.
.org.mz Organisations, associations and non-profit projects.
.net.mz Network and infrastructure projects; also used as an alternative to .co.mz.
.ac.mz Properly licensed education and research institutions (licences required).
.edu.mz Also for education, without that paperwork requirement — the alternative when licences are missing.
.adv.mz Lawyers and law firms.

Who runs these extensions

1 .mz — run by CIUEM, the Computing Centre of Eduardo Mondlane University. Availability can be checked on the official whois at whois.nic.mz.

Extensions with special requirements

Not all of them are open to everyone — and the paperwork required differs from one to the next:

1 .ac.mzproperly licensed education and research institutions. The operating licences must be produced; having "school" or "institute" in the name is not enough.
2 .edu.mz — also for education, but without that paperwork requirement. If the institution does not yet hold every licence needed for .ac.mz, this is the extension to use.
3 .gov.mz and .mil.mz — reserved for state and military bodies. The request requires an official letter from the body itself, addressed to CIUEM, on letterhead and signed by someone empowered to do so. They are not registered by private parties, nor by third parties on the State's behalf.

In practice: gather the paperwork first, send us the request with it, and we forward it to CIUEM. A restricted registration takes longer than a .co.mz, because it depends on the registry's review — plan for that. If your organisation does not qualify, use the commercial extension.

And the domain stays yours, in your account. The documents are only there for the registry to approve the request — they do not move the domain into anyone else's name. It sits in the account of whoever ordered it, and is managed in the panel like any other.

Registering more than one is common and cheap against the risk: it stops anyone else using your name on another extension, and they can all point to the same site.

Not sure whether you qualify for a restricted extension? Ask before paying.
