How long DNS changes take to propagate

You changed the nameservers or a DNS record and nothing happened yet. That's normal — DNS changes are not instant.

How long it takes

1 Usually 30 minutes to 4 hours for most visitors.
2 Up to 24–48 hours in the worst case, depending on the network and the operator.
3 Nameserver changes (pointing the domain to a different host) take longer than editing a single record.

Why some people already see the new site and others don't

Every network keeps a cached copy of the answer for a period defined by the TTL of the record. Until that copy expires, that network keeps showing the old answer. That's why the site may already work on your mobile data but not on your office Wi-Fi.

How to follow the propagation

1 Use a public checker such as dnschecker.org, which queries servers in several countries at once.
2 Or, from a terminal, query the record directly:
nslookup yourdomain.com
nslookup -type=MX yourdomain.com
3 Compare what you get with the nameservers your hosting should be using.
Speeding it up on your own device. Restart the router, or flush the DNS cache (ipconfig /flushdns on Windows). This only fixes your machine — the rest of the internet still follows the TTL.
Still the same after 48 hours? Then it isn't propagation. Check the change was actually saved at the right place — nameservers are changed at the registrar, records are changed in the DNS zone. See how to configure a domain's DNS.

Passed 48 hours and still not resolving? We'll check it with you.
