How to configure a domain DNS

Configuring DNS means telling the world where your domain should point. There are two levels, and it is worth separating them before changing anything: nameservers decide who manages the DNS, and records decide where the site and e-mail point.

Start by finding your situation

Situation	What you need to do
Domain and hosting both registered with us	Nothing. It is configured automatically
Domain elsewhere, hosting with us	Step 1 — change the nameservers
Already pointing to us, need to add or change a record	Step 2 — edit the records
You want to keep DNS with another provider	Create an A record there with your server’s IP

STEP 1

Point the domain at MozOut

This change is made where the domain is registered — not in cPanel. If you registered the domain with another company, you need to log in to their panel.

Replace the current nameservers with these four:

        dns1.mozout.com

        dns2.mozout.com

        dns3.mozout.com

        dns4.mozout.com

For .co.mz domains this is done at the national registry. If you do not have access, ask us — we will handle it for you.

STEP 2

Create or change records

Once the domain points to us, records can be managed from either of two places:

A. In cPanel — Zone Editor
For domains hosted with us. Log in to cPanel, go to Domains → Zone Editor, and choose Manage on the domain.

B. In My MozOut — DNS Manager
Open the domain under Domains → My Domains and use the DNS Manager link in the side menu, inside Domain Details Management.

In My MozOut, use the side menu link. The domain details page also shows a Manage button next to the extras: that one reloads the same page instead of opening DNS management. The correct route is the DNS Manager link in the side menu.

The records you will use most

Type	What it does	Typical use

TXT	Stores verification text	SPF, DKIM, proving domain ownership

Before changing anything, take a photo or note down the current records. If something goes wrong, you can put them back exactly as they were.

Things to watch out for

Changing nameservers discards the previous setup
When you point the domain at us, the records that existed at the old provider no longer apply. If your e-mail is with another service, note the MX records first and recreate them here — otherwise e-mail stops.

Do not mix the two routes
If the domain uses our nameservers, edit in cPanel or My MozOut. If it uses another provider’s, edit there — changes made here will have no effect at all.

One wrong record takes the site offline
If you are unsure of a value, ask before saving. It can be corrected afterwards, but that means waiting for propagation all over again.

After saving

The change is not immediate worldwide. Changing nameservers takes longer than changing a record. To follow propagation, see how to check a domain’s DNS.
