cPanel carries a tool built for WordPress, in the Domains section. It knows about the installations on your account and does, from the panel, a set of things you would normally only do from inside the site. It earns its keep in two moments: when you are looking after several sites at once, and when you cannot get into one of them.
What it can do
| Task | Why it helps |
| Install | Creates the database, copies the files and leaves a working site, with no FTP involved. |
| List your installations | One page with every WordPress on the account and the version each one runs. |
| Open the dashboard | Takes you into the site without asking for the WordPress password. |
| Set a new administrator password | Solves the classic case: password lost, and the recovery mailbox lost with it. |
| Update core, themes and plugins | Handles updates without visiting each site. |
| Manage themes and plugins | Install, activate and remove, from the panel. |
| Change the site address | Writes the new address without you editing the database by hand. |
| Back up and restore the site | A backup of that WordPress specifically, separate from the whole account backup. |
| Clear the cache | Useful when you changed something and the old page keeps showing. |
| Change the sign in address | It stops being /wp-admin and becomes an address only you know. |
| Choose the language | The language of that site’s dashboard. |
| Remove, or stop managing | Deletes the installation, or simply drops it from the list and leaves the site alone. |
| Not every option shows on every account. This tool comes in editions with more and with fewer features, and what your plan shows depends on that. If something in this list is missing from your panel, nothing is broken: ask us and we will tell you what your account has. |
This tool or the general installer?
| If you want… | Use |
| WordPress only, and to manage it afterwards | The WordPress tool, in the Domains section. |
| Any other application | Softaculous Apps Installer, in the Software section. It carries hundreds of applications besides WordPress. |
| An older WordPress release, on purpose | The general installer keeps previous WordPress releases alongside the current one. That is for reproducing a problem, not for putting a site live. |
| Removing through the tool really removes. It takes the files and the database with it. It is not a deactivate. If you want to keep the site and only drop it from the managed list, use the option that stops managing it, not the one that removes it. |
What it does not replace
The backup this tool makes is of WordPress. The daily backup of the whole account is a different thing, it lives in JetBackup in the Files section, and it carries your mail and everything else as well. The two get along, and the safe road is to have both. See restoring a backup yourself and keeping your own backup.
