Which hosting plan for a musician or band: music, videos and events

The short answer: a musician’s site is a shop window: biography, gig dates, links to listen and a contact to book. It is light, and the entry plan will do. The rule that helps most: do not host the music and videos on your plan; put them on an audio and video service and embed them on the page.

What weighs, and what does not

Part of the site What to do
Music and videos Big files eat space and bandwidth. Use an audio or video service and embed the player on the page. If you really want to host a file, keep it small.
Gig dates A list in text (date, venue, tickets), quick to update. Remove past gigs or move them to an archive.
Photographs For press and for fans. Shrink them and offer a big version to download separately: Image optimisation. Respect whoever took them: Photos for your website.
Bookings An e-mail and a WhatsApp for promoters, with a downloadable press kit (biography, photos, technical needs).
Tickets and sales Use a ticketing service. If you sell merchandise, it is already a shop: Which plan for a shop.

How to choose, step by step

1 Start with the entry plan and a site with five sections: home, music, gigs, about, contact.
2 Embed the music from a service of its own and test on a phone.
3 Put the booking contact at the top, in text and with WhatsApp.
4 Share the page on social media with the direct link: Pointing your domain at a social page.
Copyright. Only publish music and images that are yours or that you have a licence for. A track with third-party rights can lead to a takedown notice. Rights vary by country.
On the days of a big gig the site gets a peak: a light, cached page copes better: Preparing for a traffic spike.
