Connecting to a Windows VPS with Remote Desktop

A Windows VPS is reached with Remote Desktop instead of SSH. The rest — how the server is delivered and what's your responsibility — works the same as on a Linux VPS.

Your access details

1 After payment, our team prepares the server and sends you the IP address, the Administrator user and the password by e-mail. It isn't instant.
2 If nothing arrived, check spam and then open a ticket.

Connecting from Windows

1 Press Windows + R, type mstsc and press Enter — that opens Remote Desktop Connection.
2 In Computer, type your server's IP address and click Connect.
3 Enter Administrator and the password you were sent. Accept the certificate warning on the first connection — it's expected.

Connecting from other systems

1 macOS — install Windows App (formerly Microsoft Remote Desktop) from the App Store.
2 Linux — use Remmina or FreeRDP.
3 Phone — Microsoft's Remote Desktop app works on Android and iOS.
Change the Administrator password on your first login. Windows servers exposed to the internet are scanned constantly. A weak Administrator password is the single most common way these servers get compromised — and a compromised server can be suspended for attacking others.
Backups are yours to plan. As with any unmanaged server, the daily backups on shared hosting don't apply here. Set up your own before you put anything important on it.
