Moving a Blogger blog to WordPress

It happens in three stages: get the content out of Blogger, put it into WordPress, and deal with the old addresses, which is the part most people forget and the one that costs most later.

1. Export from Blogger

1 Sign in to Blogger and open the blog settings.
2 Find the option to manage and back up your content, and download the file. It comes as XML.
3 Save it somewhere you can upload it from again. This file carries the posts, the pages and the comments.

2. Import into WordPress

1 In the WordPress dashboard, open Tools and then Import.
2 On the Blogger row, install the importer and, when it finishes, run it.
3 Upload the XML file you downloaded.
4 WordPress asks which author to attribute the content to: pick an existing user, or create one.
5 Let it finish. On a big blog the process can be cut short by the maximum execution time: if that happens, run the importer again and it carries on from where it stopped.
The images do not all come across. The importer tries to pull them into your media library, but it does not always manage, and some stay loaded from Google servers. Walk through your most important posts and check. Leave it as it is and delete the old blog, and the images vanish.

If the import keeps dying halfway, the cause is usually time or memory: PHP limits.

3. The old addresses

Blogger builds post addresses its own way, with the year and the month and ending in .html. WordPress uses a different shape. Ignore this and anyone holding the old addresses, search engines included, starts hitting errors.

Situation What to do
The blog lived on a Blogger address In Blogger, set the redirect to the new domain if you keep it alive. Otherwise, accept that the old addresses die.
The blog already used your own domain Point the domain here and handle the addresses in WordPress with a redirection plugin. See pointing your domain here and changing the DNS of a domain in use.
You want the addresses to stay the same WordPress permalinks can get close to the old shape. Not identical, but close enough for many cases.
Do not delete the Blogger blog on the same day. Leave it standing while you confirm WordPress has everything, images included. Deleting is easy, and there is no way back.

The final check list

1 You counted the posts on both sides and the numbers match.
2 You opened five old posts at random and the images show.
3 The static pages came across, and they are in the menu.
4 The domain points here and the site opens with a padlock.
5 You took a backup of the new site before touching anything else.

If what you are moving is not a Blogger blog but a site that already exists at another provider, the article you want is moving your site to us.
